Orsillo At His Best

"The Red Sox played a 4 game series in Chicago, and the season series is even at 2 games apiece, with the 2 teams splitting that 4 game series in Chicago."

Sox-Yankees, So Far So Good

How can you not love it? Just destroying the MFY, in NY. Thoughts? You betcha!

-The MFY defense is terrible. On Monday, Jason Bay hit a 12 hopper through the middle that their Gold Glove shortstop could not even knock down, which allowed Youk to score from 2nd. Last night, Nady could not quite get to Jason Bay's fly ball in the first, allowing two runs to score. Last night, we saw bobby "Afraid Of Walls" Abreu timidly go after Jason Bay's long fly ball to right center that he played into a triple. They are second in the league in terms of least errors, but there may not be one above average defensive player on that roster.

-Tek having the green light on 3-0 in the first inning? Amazing, and it worked (He singled to right, but Bay was thrown out at the plate). Ten days ago, I would have thrown my remote at the wall; it is amazing what a little hot streak can do for you.

-Orsillo-ism from the ninth inning Monday night. This is a direct quote word for word. "With a win, Wakefield will pick up his 8th win of the year and even his individual record and make it 8 and 8." That sentence defies gravity. How can you be repetitive three times in one sentence? For Don Orsillo, it is no problem. I did not get the exact quote last night, but my wife picked up on one late in the game. Something like "This is the middle game of the 3 game series; tomorrow will be the finale." The man is amazing.

-You cannot hit a ball better than Pedroia hit that grand slam in the 8th.

-I do not know who at NESN decided to start showing a forlorn Hank Steinbrenner as the game got out of hand last night, but give him a raise.

-Does John Chandler know that when he hosts SportsDesk, 90% of the people watching say the same thing: "Damnit! Where the hell is Kathryn Tappen?!"

-To get Paul Byrd and Mark Kotsay for virtually nothing after the trade deadline is an amazing feather in the cap for Theo Epstein. Now if he can just stop signing crappy shortstops to long-term big money deals.

-What an amazing catch made by Justin Ruggiano to preserve the Rays 1-0 win last night at the Trop.

-The roller coaster ride that is Manny Delcarmen continues. On Monday, he allowed two walks and a hit in 1/3 of an inning. Last night, he looked better, striking out two in one clean inning, though I believe he went to three balls on each hitter. He has a great arm, but tough to trust someone who cannot throw strikes consistently. I remember him having better control last year, but I guess that is not the case. This year, 56 innings, 22 walks (3.5 walks per 9 innings); Last year he walked 17 in 44 innings (3.47 walks per 9 innings).

-Sox play 20 of their last 30 at Fenway Park. Or as Don Orsillo would say at home at Fenway Park.

-Remember the line from Bronx Tale when Sonny stands over the biker guys after the brawl in the bar? The biker guys are all battered, sprawled out on the street and Sonny stands over one and says "Look at me. Look me. I'm the guy who did this to you." When the Sox leave that armpit of a stadium later today, that is how Pedroia should look at the entire Yankee team.

-Very big start for Lester today. Was that bad start an aberration, or is he starting to fatigue in the 2nd half? I think it was an aberration and he pitches very well today.

Postseason Odds

Y'all have probably seen this, but this is a site I like to keep my eye on as August becomes September. It chartes the post-season odds for all the MLB teams, playiong the rest of the season a million times.

Hey, we are in a pennant race!

-Good weekend by the Sox. Sure, Saturday was hideous, but 2 out of 3 in the horror house that is the Sky Dome, we will take it and go quietly. Yesterday was huge. The Rays were on TBS, I was flipping back and forth, and I thought for sure that we were in deep doo-doo. The Rays were going to win, the Sox were going to lose, and the AL East slipped further and further away. But then stepped up the noted power tandom of Crisp and Lowrie, some brutal umpiring in the Rays game (more on tha later), and the Sox were back to 3.5 out of first.

-My worked just banned SI.com beacuase of what it terms "intinate swimwear content." That must be all the stuff they show for their annual Swimsuit edition. A monday without Peter King's MMQB is simply not the same.

-Ellsbury and Bay both made amazing catches against the wall to keep the game close yesterday.

-Still not sure Matt Stairs was really out at the plate, but we will take it.

-Delcarmen came in and I was really nervous. With an off day today, I would have left Pap in there for a 3rd inning (he only throw 16 pitches in 2 innings), but Tito went with Delcarmen. After the predictable walk to Vernon "I try against the Red Sox and no one else" Wells, Manny got out of the inning unscathed. I think he went to 3 balls on every hitter, but he did his job, and got the Red Sox their first 1 run road win since April.

-The fact that Wells and Rios are being out-homered by Pedroia and Varitek should be enough to demand that both Blue Jays need to give back a portion of their salary.

-Someone please tell me Julio Lugo will not get his job back.

-Someone please tell me that there is nothing seriously wrong with Josh Beckett.

-Someone pleae tell me we will never see Matt Cassel play a meaningful minute of football for the Pats.

-Kurt Warner is the starter for AZ. I cannot blame Matt Leinart for living the party life, but IMHO, it will be part of the reason he is not succeeding in AZ. All the weapons are in place for a great offense, but Warner has simply ouplayed Leinart, and the Cards made the right move there.

-Osi Umenyiora is out for the year? That's a shame.

-For anyone who saw the rundown play in the Rays-White Sox game yesterday involving A.J. Pierzynski's in the 10th, you know the Rays got screwed. Pierzynski was dead on the basepaths, in a rundown between 2nd and third. He semi backpeddled into a Rays player (I forget who), stuck out his rear and his elbox, fell down, and the umps awarded him 3rd base, ruling the Rays player interfered with Pierzynski. Absolutely horrendous call, and the announcers were all over the umps. They even did their huddle thing, but still got it wrong. Don't get me wrong, I wanted the Rays to lose, but that call was inexcuseable. Amazing how Pierzynski always seems to be in the middle of controversy.

-The Shield, Season 6 on DVD tomorrow. Oh yeah, I am making a trip to Targer after work.

-Youk and Pedroia must really get under the skin of people who do not like the Red Sox.

-For all the nitwits who like to promote the guts and grit of
david eckstein, I hope they take note that the Blue Jays have played much better since John McDonald was inserted as the every day shortstop.

Just Jacoby Being Jacoby

There was an interesting play that took place in the second inning of the Red Sox 7-2 win over the Orioles, Jacoby Ellsbury swung and hit a bill that lingered behind home plate. Ellsbury stood there, while Orioles catcher Ramon Hernandez alertly waited to see if the spin would cause the ball to go fair. It did, and Hernandez tagged out Ellsbury who was still standing in the batter's box. A mistake by Ellsbury, one from which I am sure he will learn.

I will go out on a limb and say the Boston papers and WEEI (Boston Sports Radio) nitwits will spend zero time talking about this play today. It was fairly irrelevant in the Red Sox 7-2 on Tuesday night. But if Manny Ramirez had done the same thing, it would be wall to wall coverage. Non-stop talk about Manny, and how he is a cancer on the team, and he never hustles, and how much he is paid. But Ellsbury did it, and it will not be mentioned. Why? Because of the money Manny makes? Maybe. Because of his history of doing quirky things? Maybe. I have no idea. All I know is that whether it is Ellsbury not running out this play, or JD Drew missing a few games because of a minor tweak, or Trot Nixon tossing the ball into the stands when there were two outs, there seemed to be two sets of rules for the Boston media. One set for the Red Sox team, one set for Manny.

Look, I am not a Manny apologist. I loved him when he was here, but it was time for him to go. The Red Sox overpaid to get rid of him (figuratively and literarily) but they did well to being back an All Star caliber player like Jason Bay. If the Sox played the Dodgers tomorrow, I would cheer for him when he was announced as the batter. I would think most Red Sox fans, appreciative, of his role in two World Series wins would do the same. But it just seems to me that Manny was a lightning rod, and the Boston media pounced on him for every little thing. Sometimes, it was justified, like if Manny loafed when running out a ground ball. Other times, it was exaggerated, like when Manny would have a day off in the middle of July.

But I guess what I am getting it is that the Red Sox have seen a lot of great players end their career elsewhere, and leave on somewhat less than ideal terms. Manny is just the latest, but when he left, he alluded to Nomar Garciaparra. There is a lot of scrutiny on every Red Sox player, but it just seems that if you play nice with WEEI and the Globe, the spotlight might just be a little less bright when you make a bonehead play.
