Texas people is so Smart

I would like to introduce my loyal readers (my wife, my mom, and hopefully a few others) to Demetris McCoy. Mr McCoy is the Watauga, Texas teen who gave pot to toddlers and got 8 years. As smart as that sounds, wait until you hear this Alan Dershowitz in training's defesne was.

"They wasn't even high," Mr. McCoy said. "They didn't even inhale it right."

http://www.fundistraction.com/2007/03/little-kids-smoking-weed.html

Right around here is when Mr. McCoy's defense attorney might have wanted to nudge him in the ribs and told him to keep quiet. But it got better

"Some people give their kids alcohol, let them smoke ice, methamphetamines. Weed ain't going to kill them," he said.

Enjoy your 8 years, Mr. Mccoy....hope it was worth it.

Things That Bug Me

You know those ads for re-financing where they show silhoutes dancing over their newly found low mortgage rates. Those ads absolutely drive me mad.

Can we play the Mariners all the time?

I am not trying to say the Mariners are bad, but when your primary DH is jose vidro, it does not look good.

When will these teams learn that baseball has changed and the free-swinging approach is not the way to go anymore? Teams that work the count, get walks, get starting pitchers out of the game early are the ones that win?

Justin Masterson, thank you. I do not need to go on and on about what a great job he did yesterday because everyone saw it, but that was as impressive as it gets.

Another slow hook for Tito, and I was on the phone with the world famous
Stew Winkel, and we both agreed that when the 6th inning started, tito should have someone ready to go. One baserunner, and it should be a pat on the back for young Mr. Bucholz. He did not and the result was a HR that tied up the game. Then, amazingly, he left Bucholz in the game, and he then predictably let up a few more baserunners before Masterson came in and saved the day.

Great outing by the bullpen in general. But I want to tell Okajima something, Come here, Oki, I know you are an ASMGGTK fan. A little closer. DO NOT WALK MIGUEL CAIRO ON 4 PITCHES WITH TWO OUTS AND NO ONE ON BASE! Cairo is, how shall I say this correctly, a terrible hitter. I am down on Manny Delcarmen, but he was very solid yesterday, and helped Oki get out of that mini-jam. Oki's numbers have been a lot better recently, but until he improves that control, he will not inspire the faith that he did last season.

Craig Hansen will learn that there is more to pitching that having great stuff, which he does posess. There is throwing strikes, and fielding your position. He will learn that, but it may have to be somewhere else. He did make it interesting in the 12th, but did put up a zero and notched his second save (the first was a similar kind of extra inning situation against the Reds). He has not been used in a key spot in a while and did get the job done.

How far has Mike Timlin fallen? 12 inning game where the starter went 5 1/3, and he does not get a call, though he did warm up in the 12th. Not sure why Lopez was warming up in the 12th if he did not come in to face Suzuki or Ibanez.

Ellsbury may want to stop swinging at the first pitch. It was annoying when Nomar did it, but he also was leading the league in hitting. it is real annoying when Ellsbury continues to do it and he is in a Varitekian slump (though his leadoff single in the 12th was obviosuly huge).

I cannot find the stat anywhere, but Jonathan Papelbon was as unlikely to produce a double play as anyone in MLB. He got two key ones in the Mariner series, including one yesterday in the 11th.

Random Thoughts, Wondering if The Sox Can Play All Their games At Fenway

*It may be a little premature, but we may want to call Julio Lugo the 21st century version of Wally Pipp. Jed Lowrie has not set the world on fire, but in order to take over for Julio Lugo, he does not have to. He had a key base hit and two RBI last night, and he made a great catch on a little bloop into shallow left in the 6th.

*We here at ASMGGTK have been tough on Jason Varitek, but you had to feel happy for him last night. He has had some base hits here and there, but he has not driven the ball like that in a long time (the man is slugging .361). But he crushed that ball last night, and it got the Sox off to a good start.

*Good to see the bottom of the lineup produce.
Coco "Swing and a popup" Crisp had a hit, 3 BB's, and 2 runs, tek was 2-4 with a BB and the HR, and Lowrie was 2-3 with a BB. Mike Lowell continues to be in a funk....I am no Walt Hriniak  but stop trying to pull the outside breaking ball, Mike.

*Happy to see
C's have re-signed Tony Allen and Eddie House. I still have high hopes for Tony Allen. He was playing like an all star before he tore his knee in 2006-2007, and he played great in a losing effort in Game 5 of the Finals (please see Box Score from that game). We all know what Eddie House brings to the table and what he does not, and I think he is definitely worthy of that 2 year deal. We do not win Game 4 without House, and he was a big contributor all year long. He also never said a peep when Doc continued to play Sam Cassell over him in the playoffs.

*Can someone explain to me how Jason Taylor, one of the best DE's in the NFL, merits a 2nd and a 6th round pick, while Jeremy shockey, a typical U-Miami overrated, selfish loudmouth merits a 2nd and a  5th? I know
Taylor is 32 years old, but c'mon. In order to get jared allen, the vikings sent the Chiefs a first round pick, two third round picks and swapped sixth round picks. Yes he is younger than Taylor (26), but that is an amazing discrepancy. Plus, the redskins were dealing from a position of weakness because Phillip Daniels just went down with a season ending injury. You could say the fins had to move Taylor, but there was no rush....they could trade him before the trade deadline, or they could wait until the off-season.

*If you heard a loud scream when this trade went down, it was Matt Light jumping for joy somewhere.

*It is painfully obvious that Terry Francona has no faith in anyone in that bullpen right now, other than Papelbon. He stuck with Beckett too long on Saturday,
Wakefield too long on Sunday, and Lester a little too long last night. Plus, he went to Papelbon for a rare 5 out save last night. Tito will say otherwise, but actions speak louder than words.

*Mike Reiss is probably the best person in town right now for Pats coverage (he does not make up stories like John Tomasse, but still he is pretty good). In today's Globe,
Reiss has his 10 storylines at Pats training camp. To me, the big key is Richard Seymour. Big #93 has been pretty quiet the past few years. Is it old age, is it too many battle scars, or was he just not playing at full strength? If he is playing like an All-Pro, this is an entirely different defense.

*Adalius Thomas will have a huge year for the Patriots, mark that down.

*The Brett Favre saga? Let me know when it is all done, thanks!

Buyer Beware

Last night, the A's traded Joe Blanton to the Philadelphia Phillies. On paper this looks like a good deal for the Phillies. The Phils were tied for the NL East lead, and adding a top pitcher might be enough to secure a playoff birth. Blanton is having a tough year, but typically, when an AL pitcher heads to the NL, they will fare a littlebetter. But Joe Blanton's home/road splits are stunning. This year, it is not as bad because he has been pretty bad home and away. But let's look at last year, when he was one of the top 15-20 starting pitchers in the AL.

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7461/splits;_ylt=AuQww_mZxIITBHQPHCO3dFiFCLcF?year=2007&type=Pitching

He is going from one of the best pitcher parks in baseball (the joke that is McAfee Coliseum) to one of the best hitters parks in MLB, Citizens Bank Park). Again, go back to the link below and see how, even in his effective year of 2007, LH hitters hit him at a .291 clip, while RH hitters only hit .248. This is not unusual for Joe Blanton only, but is a warning sign as he heads to the Phillies as they try to hold off the Red Hot Mets.
